So many people find pleasure on Ogunquit beach. This morning there was a 5K race in honor of a lifeguard who lost his life. Hundreds gathered for this festive 5 kilometer run on the sands of Ogunquit beach.<br />
<br />
Christian Lumenello was a lifeguard that passed tragically. This was the 3rd annual run that raises thousands of dollars for lifeguard services in Ogunquit.<br />

The weather was overcast and humid, but that did not stop over 300 runners that ran down the beach through tide pools and uneven sand! Once again, elite runner Bobby Winn placed first with an amazing time of 17 minutes and 8 seconds. Bear in mind Bobby is 55 years old!<br />

<div>
I like to celebrate my birthday, with a nice meal, run on the beach and of course cake. <br />
<br />
What I miss most on my birthday are the people who made me feel special on this day growing up.<br />
Most of them are gone, but I guess that is the fate of growing older. My parents always made a fuss and surprised me with a party or an outing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Because my birthday is in June, it always started the summer season, which is my favorite time of the year. June signaled the end of the school year, and all the things that I liked most: sun, beach, vacation and adventure.....All things are possible in the endless summer. Or so it seemed as a child. </div>

I started the day with a nice long run on the beach, followed by a 90 minute deep tissue massage by Ron Bergeron at the Massage Studio of Ogunquit.<br />

My sister Cheryl, and her husband came up from Massachusetts for a visit. We meandered on the Marginal Way, and lunched at the Lobster Shack in Perkins Cove. The Lobster Shack is great little restaurant; it's at the end of the busy cove and it was originally a lobsterman's <em>shack</em>. The Lobster Shack offers gluten free home made clam chowder. Owner/operator Jason Evans stated that it is a family recipe, and he does not use any flour or soup bases to make this fine chowder. The chowder was accompanied with fresh lobster meat on a lettuce with tomato-perfect for lunch by the sea!<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
Today is National Running Day. Coincidentally it is also The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Maine Special Olympics. This is the 12th year I have been involved with the Maine Special Olympics and the 28th year Ogunquit Police has participated. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started the day with a easy run though the village and Marginal Way and Perkins Cove. I almost always run in the morning, It's a way to clear my head and wake up my body. I am able to collect my thoughts, think and enjoy the beautiful sounds of the sea. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Following my short run in the morning, it was off to the York/Ogunquit town line and wait for the "Flame of Hope torch" that is being carried throughout Maine to signal the start of the Maine Special Olympics. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the spirit of community policing, Ogunquit Police, invites the community to run with members of the police department. This year, Laura Rose, of Compass Rose Yoga, Ogunquit lifeguard, Nick Lumenello with his brothers, as well as innkeepers, Jimmy Lucibello and Rick Barber participated in the run. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Before we ran, Yoga instructor, Laura Rose warmed us up with a variety of yoga poses. Bear in mind, we are on US Route 1, at the town line during rush hour, doing these poses. I am sure it was a sight to see!</div>

The best part of the Torch Run is the overwhelming support from the townspeople. As we run through town, people wave, cheer and toot their horns. They also show support monetarily. </div>

<strong><em>Some people say funny things, but I say things funny.</em></strong></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
-Don Rickles<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
He is Ogunquit's funny man, Khris Francis. This year's show is called "Last Man Standing". Khris Francis' show is actually the longest running one man comedy show in New England. <br />
<br />
Khris is not only a wonderful storyteller and comic but also an amazing singer, and musician. Khris can also improvise, compose and sing a song upon request. It is amazing to see. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmIXlmaNc8ift2IzgsJXCJhcKBJzGG45PivH_Eg6t_j4OMVLQE8Bf9cLJHwUdOWm8fT4UCA5Aof3jMqUKpv7MsaLFym3Y6jS_IwiXdujr0FqNX3NhBYEJiAARHYr5lFfOZLX2suRvgSaLJ/s1600/khisflores.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmIXlmaNc8ift2IzgsJXCJhcKBJzGG45PivH_Eg6t_j4OMVLQE8Bf9cLJHwUdOWm8fT4UCA5Aof3jMqUKpv7MsaLFym3Y6jS_IwiXdujr0FqNX3NhBYEJiAARHYr5lFfOZLX2suRvgSaLJ/s400/khisflores.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
His show is a mix of stand up comedy and sit down naughty-ness with an array of spicy language. His sold out shows are not for the faint of heart, and do contain adult content. Think gay Don Rickles.<br />
<br />
Many of Khris' stories and come from his Italian heritage growing up in southern California. Khris still spends winters in southern California and tours in the winter when he is not in Ogunquit Maine.<br />

<br />
I saw Khris' act on opening night of the new MaineStreet <em><strong>Live</strong>. </em>This new addition to the MaineStreet complex features a cabaret room with a bar, stage, VIP area and splendid roof deck that overlooks the busy Ogunquit Square. Khris works the room and actually makes patrons participate is some of his routines.This lucky guy showed everyone what he is made of, and of course what his abs are made of! Warning: There are no sacred cows.<br />

Every year there are charity races that utilize the beautiful white sands of Ogunquit beach!<br />
<br />

<br />
One local charity is the <a href="http://peabodycenter.org/">Frannie Peabody Center</a> of Portland/Ogunquit. The Frannie Peabody mission is to "Prevent the spread of HIV and provide support for those living with HIV/AIDS in Maine". This agency does amazing things for people living with HIV. They also provide services for people at risk of HIV. Frannie Peabody's commitment to the people of Ogunquit has been exemplary! Consistently they have provided services, education, testing and prevention to countless visitors and residents.<br />

This year was the 5th annual Frannie Peabody 5km race/walk. This professionally timed race features: runners, team runners, walkers and many dedicated volunteers. Ogunquit's own Jimmy Lucibello is a big advocate and fundraiser for Frannie Peabody Center. He has personally raised over $8100 for this event and has donated his time to helping people that suffer from HIV. This year over $50,000 was raised, here in the little town of Ogunquit.<br />

<br />
The cost of the race is $25 which is amazing. For $25 you get a T-shirt, "goody-bag", yoga stretch, timed race, food, post run message; and a beautiful race through Ogunquit that starts and ends on the beach! Ogunquit's Funny Man, Khris Francis, was the master of ceremonies. I always enjoy this hometown race and some of my guests at <a href="http://www.ogunquitbeachinn.com/">Ogunquit Beach Inn</a> were able to participate this year. <br />

<br />
My cousin Joshua ran the race this year. Joshua has got "bitten" by the race bug. Throughout the spring, Joshua has been doing 5k's throughout northern New England. It was really fun to run with a member of my family; something I have never done before. Joshua towers over 6'2" (1.88cm), and is a <i>Clydesdale </i>of a runner. He trots along with a steady determined stride. His stamina is amazing. He gets so much out of running as I do!<br />

With rain in the forecast, spectator turnout was modest. Miraculously the sky cleared and the warm ocean breezes gave a refreshing start to this quick 5k race. The last 1.5 kilometers was the best and the hardest. Running on Ogunquit beach is something I do virtually everyday, but there was a modest headwind that slowed me down a bit. Running on sand does take more of an effort due to the texture of the sand against your running shoes.<br />

The Marginal Way is an old trail (some say Native American trail) that hovers the coast. Starting in the village off of Shore Road after Cottage Street, the trail ends at Perkins Cove. The trail is @ 1.25 mile each way (1.8 km).<br />

Runners, surfers and walkers use this path daily for exercise and recreation. Best time is morning before the afternoon sightseers. The Marginal Way provides solace for many each and everyday. I enjoy running on this trail at sunrise. the air is fresh and fragrant scent of salt and flowers!<br />

The strip of land along the water's edge has a an abundant variety of plants and birds. The high tides leave tide pools filled with marine life: crabs, barnacles, shells, sea urchins and Sea Anemones. <br />

World famous Provincetown is located on the tip of Cape Cod 195 miles south of Ogunquit. Like Ogunquit, it's roots are in the sea, and salt is in the air. Like Ogunquit, it is a tourist destination filled with artists, gays, and general tourists. The quaint town is dotted with restaurants, art galleries and a variety of lodgings ( Inns, B&B guesthouses etc).<br />

My good friend Jay has a house on Cook Street in the East End, and my nephew Eric also lives in the same neighborhood. Jay's house is a typical Cape Cod shingled contemporary duplex. The top floor has a sitting terrace which overlooks Cape Cod bay. The unit has three bedrooms, a large living room and two bathrooms. It's a perfect place to spend a vacation with family and friends. It's also for rent, <a href="http://ptownvacationrentals.com/">Ptown Vacation Rentals</a><br />

The "Breakwater" is a 1.2 milestone jetty that connects crosses Provincetown harbor to Wood End Lighthouse. Michael and I crossed the rock dike at low tide and went to the expansive deserted beach. The beach is a long stretch of sand and there are two lighthouses at both ends. The Wood End Lighthouse is now solar powered.<br />

While hiking along the quiet secluded beach we heard a sound of something exhaling. we looked to the sea and we saw a whale that was swimming along the shore line. As I was beach combing, I found a lobster buoy, to my surprise it was from Maine!!<br />

There is plenty to do in P-town during the day, but at night, the vibe is much different than the serene National Seashore. Commercial Street is alive with tourists and sightseers. The famous "<a href="http://www.ptownlobsterpot.com/">Lobster Pot</a> Restaurant" is a must if you are visiting Provincetown.<br />

This long expansive Ptown institution serves hundreds of pounds of lobster and other sea fare daily. To my surprise they now have a gluten free menu, which is quite expansive and satisfying. I had the baked lobster in butter.<br />

With morning lows of 30 degrees ( -1c) and afternoon highs of 50 degrees (10c) , you know it's April in Maine. Like other migratory birds, we have returned to our beloved little town-by-the-sea, Ogunquit Maine! Our endless summer is stalled, while we have a brief visit of Spring ( a <em>Maine </em>Spring, that is!).<br />

For over 16 years, We have been busy in Maine during the summer, and do not have the opportunity to visit other summertime resrot communities. After leaving Savannah, GA we drove over 650 miles (1045km) to Rehoboth Beach Delaware.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4TZ4Sr6NbpVoo7RmnGDWhqZ4Dyhes3DXaHhJN5_is__9doCOYYt9wCM1LJJLS-a1cSyMIzyFPBWVxPRqdkeiFuNc6kONqg1LU-dQrqZAL5YOBZtfMrO7ZwYtPBQ0PRxwR416NqU41u5z3/s1600/delmarva.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4TZ4Sr6NbpVoo7RmnGDWhqZ4Dyhes3DXaHhJN5_is__9doCOYYt9wCM1LJJLS-a1cSyMIzyFPBWVxPRqdkeiFuNc6kONqg1LU-dQrqZAL5YOBZtfMrO7ZwYtPBQ0PRxwR416NqU41u5z3/s400/delmarva.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
While driving north, we took the Chesapeake Bay Bridege-Tunnel; a 23 mile long bridge/tunnel that connects Virginia and the <i>Delmarva </i>peninsula. The bridge is engineering marvel and a $12 toll road. We drove from the Virginia mainland across the tunnel/bridge to the peninsula. The peninsula is on the coastal plain and features rolling sand dunes and preserve areas with an abundance of ocean fowl. About 160 + plus miles up the Delmarva peninsula lies the resort town of Rehoboth Beach. <br />
<br />
<br />
Rehoboth Beach is a resort town located on the coast. Like Ogunquit it is a gay destination, dotted with gay B&B's, restaurants and bars. However, Rehoboth Beach also has the quintessential beach honky tonk feel, with a mile long boardwalk, taffy, funnel cakes and a wide range of visitors. Some of the Gay B&B's, restaurants and shops are located on the quiet tree-lined street Baltimore Avenue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9hSGDClP6GcN64MNI4FyfvU816hpYt0X19VsQmd7zkAC2KNeDxrHwIykvKx983ybW7m0l3vVbDOxCpZxv4EpKGTAxwxgxllENd03usHt__ruiK2iQcotlhCa4qumE-sCU99ajUdqn2KEY/s1600/bluemoon.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9hSGDClP6GcN64MNI4FyfvU816hpYt0X19VsQmd7zkAC2KNeDxrHwIykvKx983ybW7m0l3vVbDOxCpZxv4EpKGTAxwxgxllENd03usHt__ruiK2iQcotlhCa4qumE-sCU99ajUdqn2KEY/s400/bluemoon.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
On Baltimore Avenue we dined at the charming Rehoboth Beach haunt called <a href="http://bluemoonrehoboth.com/">Blue Moon Restaurant.</a> The Blue Moon is located in a craftsman styled house (similar to our <a href="http://www.ogunquitbeachinn.com/">Ogunquit Beach Inn</a>). Adjacent to the restaurant is the Blue Moon Bar, a dance & entertainment venue which features gay acts like the illusionist/magician <em><a href="https://www.facebook.com/#!/Cashetta?fref=ts">Cashetta</a></em>. The restaurant offers gluten free/vegetarian and contemporary American cuisine. We opted for the canard, which was <b>outstanding</b>.<br />
<br />

<br />
Rehoboth Avenue is the main thoroughfare in the beach area. with a wide array of businesses: pizza-by-the slice, soft serve ice cream, shell shops and the iconic "Dolles" salt water taffy that greets you at the beach adjacent to the boardwalk.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The boardwalk which is adjacent to the beach is well a mile long, and is used by runners, walkers and beach goers. The wide beach is perfect for sunbathing and ocean activities. Rehoboth Beach also hosts many races and there is even a running store on Baltimore Ave!<br />

WIth a stopover in Savannah!It's that time of year when we depart the warmth of south Florida and make our journey back north. This year we decided to make a few overnight stops at two destinations and take and be a tourist. <br />
<br />

<em>(enjoying the last day in Florida sun)</em></div>
<br />
After 7 hours of driving we stopped in Savannah, Georgia at 12 noon. Many of my friends <em>raved</em> about Savannah. I honestly had not expectations. After spending the day and night, I was actually quite impressed with this hip college town. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="center">
<em>(Architecture, hip restaurants, and lots of SCAD college kids)</em></div>

<div align="center">
<em></em></div>
Michael and I took the "trolley tour". Living in Ogunquit, we have trolleys, but these trolleys are mainly used for transporting masses people to the beaches in Ogunquit. The Savannah trolleys are actually used for touring. Savannah is quite a historical city with layers upon layers of history, and the trolley was quite helpful and informative. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAVqXRJc2vM-XmtamCMlKxY0N4G2cQHPXsjxDXN2_6GTaPDYdID88YwABgYfzIWV55A46ZW4Vez7hau9gbxYSmKe9_gpUTNHtr11LyFEncuwgFJVBnFJMg1FCR49OgdmkjsVB5i1hPG3Fr/s1600/pauladeen.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAVqXRJc2vM-XmtamCMlKxY0N4G2cQHPXsjxDXN2_6GTaPDYdID88YwABgYfzIWV55A46ZW4Vez7hau9gbxYSmKe9_gpUTNHtr11LyFEncuwgFJVBnFJMg1FCR49OgdmkjsVB5i1hPG3Fr/s400/pauladeen.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>(faux Paula Deen & Greg-being a tourist)</em></div>
<br />
We also had reservations for Paula Deen's restaurant, "Lady and Sons"-again, my expectations were not high, but again, I was pleasantly surprised. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgR0VJ2aLKmfGrdk0IZlL1UD460x1XU2TDEwKSixmHarEEFLQ9cz4zZnpbrkQueSm7H_K-NWc7obC4UB0zPGdtjfuEGAuiqRtwORQw1E-pZSXYE9YPJCpN7P15zmoFzingSKEpY8TjMNIR/s1600/lady.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgR0VJ2aLKmfGrdk0IZlL1UD460x1XU2TDEwKSixmHarEEFLQ9cz4zZnpbrkQueSm7H_K-NWc7obC4UB0zPGdtjfuEGAuiqRtwORQw1E-pZSXYE9YPJCpN7P15zmoFzingSKEpY8TjMNIR/s320/lady.png" width="172" /></a></div>
<br />
Make no mistake, Lady & Son's is a tourist destination with long waits, and crowds in the gift shop adjacent to the restaurant. To my surprise, there was a "Gluten Free" menu! Who would have thought, a southern soul food restaurant with GF options!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOBzt01AKZV0o-8-18_lxPXej9LmLSi9n77GL7AMinOo_PxhfxPOLmmWCal6qqJMna3VHezEtHs6OR20oCYsLoEIRnXEN9EPMtz7g63UuhUfxC9xNgxI2wnRkLRNxk-fvk_VyO6Gxk-GYn/s1600/ladysonsgf.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOBzt01AKZV0o-8-18_lxPXej9LmLSi9n77GL7AMinOo_PxhfxPOLmmWCal6qqJMna3VHezEtHs6OR20oCYsLoEIRnXEN9EPMtz7g63UuhUfxC9xNgxI2wnRkLRNxk-fvk_VyO6Gxk-GYn/s400/ladysonsgf.png" width="290" /></a></div>
<br />
My meal was yummy with rice, seafood (scallops, shrimp and oysters). Michael opted for the Chicken Pot pie. This was a prime example of southern soul food ala Paula Deen. A pie the size of a dinner plate with puffy braided crust and mounds of chicken.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvj7td6FCaPsnvoDm3BMmAtjz0K3za4WtFG7K30PR0b5ZRPmGnDTfYlH7qgqytdnoeKYIlN0uMGamwnYRMCydGV0jtsXo7uZu5o_qC4vaXF0VsaJAVEGKza8XpkThoPr4bgJZA21D1c4hk/s1600/mikechickenpotpie.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvj7td6FCaPsnvoDm3BMmAtjz0K3za4WtFG7K30PR0b5ZRPmGnDTfYlH7qgqytdnoeKYIlN0uMGamwnYRMCydGV0jtsXo7uZu5o_qC4vaXF0VsaJAVEGKza8XpkThoPr4bgJZA21D1c4hk/s400/mikechickenpotpie.JPG" width="287" /></a></div>
<br />
The city is fun and lively, pedestrian friendly. I went for an hour run through several neighborhoods. I think Savannah will be a new stopover on our treks back north! <br />
<br />

Its a bit of Americana history. US Route One. It stretches from Key West Florida to the Canadian Border. <br />
<br />
Originally called the Quebec-Miami international Highway in 1911 and renamed the Atlantic highway in 1915. It has many names throughout the eastern seaboard: Post Road, Main Street, Boston Post Road, Lincoln highway, Federal Highway etc.<br />

<em>The Overseas Highway, connecting the the tiny keys like a kite tail....</em><br />

Much of Route One in Maine is a coastal highway that weaves through villages and town centres. It's often called Main Street in some towns. In Ogunquit it is Main Street. <br />
<br />
We decided to re-visit our old friend, US Route One. We drove from our Fort Lauderdale home (US Route One bisects much of the city, called Federal Highway). From there we went through Miami, and then the overseas highway gain (aka US Route One).<br />

Our Route One pilgrimage took us to some of the most beautiful vistas in the Keys: aquamarine sea with shimmering coral. Tropical birds, and numerous shell shacks, (too many to count); and seaside eateries with an abundance of mid century roadside America! -Gotta love it!<br />

<em>This is where it starts....</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As many people know, Key West is an Island to itself. The very end of Florida, but <em>barely</em> Florida. Out in the sea, but not quite foreign. A former haven for bootleggers, smugglers, pirates and other assorted shady characters, Key West has welcomed them all. One unique feature about Key West is that during the Civil War, the island was part of the union. While Florida was firmly planted in the south. Most likely due to the fact that the island was a major port during that time, and navy base. To me, that free spirit lives on this small Island that the Spanish call Cayo Hueso ( Bone Cay or island).</div>

The alarm sounds off at 4:50am. I roll out of bed, stumble to the coffee maker and try to maneuver in the dark. I shuffle around the house grab my bag and drive over to Sunrise Middle School for swim practice. <br />
<br />
At 5:25am the pool is pitch black, coach John Grzeszczak of Hammerhead Aquatics turns on the outside spot lights. A few more minutes of procrastination and I take the 5:30am plunge. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiufIJgbqcZVqdwrD5d4DO5UGkidL-JoO13-rcgNHlYVyQNZ1vG6ta_AZFcReqQ-WpAqFIlCOZIM4AfXCtEGF_r3WtXct9yvepGHq530_TE4LtZcF6hszP6Jv4i7w5vMqjpX51Evn0NG34p/s1600/poolsr.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiufIJgbqcZVqdwrD5d4DO5UGkidL-JoO13-rcgNHlYVyQNZ1vG6ta_AZFcReqQ-WpAqFIlCOZIM4AfXCtEGF_r3WtXct9yvepGHq530_TE4LtZcF6hszP6Jv4i7w5vMqjpX51Evn0NG34p/s400/poolsr.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Coach John calls out our warm up for the 25 yard heated pool:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em>400 yard swim </em></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em>200 yard Pull</em></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em>200 yard kick</em></div>
<br />
After about 20 minutes of warm up, the coffee has kicked in my system. My eyes begin to adjust, and I notice other swimmers in neighboring lanes.<br />
<br />
There is a quiet rhythm with the morning swimmers. Its almost metronomic/zen like: the monotone rhythm of the water as swimmers go down the lane and push off the wall. The Splash of water and breathing are the only sounds I hear. <br />
<br />
After warm-up the coach gives us our work-out. With the warm-up, the main sets are usually a cross of breathing/speed/drill/kick and timed exercises ranging from 3000 to 3800 yards.<br />
<br />

<br />
Friends say I am crazy. " You are off all winter and you choose to get up and swim at 4:50am". I quietly nod my head and agree, but think how lucky I am. How lucky that I am able to participate in a masters swim program in Fort Lauderdale with kindred spirits, and a spirited coach. <br />
<br />
There is nothing like swimming 3000 + yards (80 to 90 minute workout) and watch the sun gently rise over the horizon. How lucky I am that my father took me to swim lessons as a child. How lucky that I have the motivation. <br />

Mainers and New Englanders are no strangers to storms. They happen every month. Some are mild. Some are fast and furious. Some are winter storms like blizzards. However, there is another type of storm that is associated with Maine and New England: The Nor'easter. <br />
<br />
When low pressure air moves into the New England region, and northeasterly winds blow in from the ocean this can produce a slow moving powerful storm. These storms can produce heavy rain or snow and dramatic coastal surges. Heavy winds are also associated with these mega-storms. This week Ogunquit and New England experienced yet another Nor'easter, named Saturn.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>Saturn </em>was a slow moving nor'easter with wind gusts up to 40mph. Ogunquit once again was prepared for coastal flooding with high tides smothering the beach and engulfing the parking lot. High seas, and 20 foot (7m) waves belted the shore and Marginal Way. Once again, schools were cancelled. </div>

I saw Richard Blanco at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami this past Friday. Richard Blanco describes himself as being made in Cuba, born in Spain and growing up in Cuban Miami. Blanco now lives in Bethel Maine with his partner. Blanco's American journey is fascinating yet also inspiring. His poems are a prism of how he sees life. Life as an immigrant living in Miami. Life as a gay man, and life as an American growing up in the late 20th century.<br />

<br />
<br />
Blanco read some poetry from (<em>City of a Hundred Fires</em>, <em>Directions to The Beach of the Dead</em>, and <em>Looking for The Gulf Motel</em>). He also read his inaugural poem.<br />
<br />
Blanco described how he was picked to be the official poet for President Obama's address. Blanco stated that he did not apply for the position, but was chosen. He described how he read the address in Washington and then turned to his Cuban born mother with limited English skills and said " Well, <i>I think We're </i>finally <i>American". </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
My favorite poem was this, which he read:<br />
<br />
<div id="page_title" style="text-align: center;">
<b>Looking for The Gulf Motel</b></div>
<span id="header"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span id="header"><i>Marco Island, Florida</i></span></div>

rising out of the sand like a cake decoration. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My brother and I should still be pretending </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
we don't know our parents, embarrassing us </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
loaded with our scruffy suitcases, two-dozen </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
loaves of Cuban bread, brown bags bulging </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
with enough mangos to last the entire week, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
our espresso pot, the pressure cooker—and </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
a pork roast reeking garlic through the lobby. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All because we can't afford to eat out, not even </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
on vacation, only two hours from our home </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
in Miami, but far enough away to be thrilled </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
by <i>whiter</i> sands on the <i>west</i> coast of Florida, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
where I should still be for the first time watching </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
the sun set instead of rise over the ocean.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>There should be nothing here I don't remember</i> . . .</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
My mother should still be in the kitchenette </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
of The Gulf Motel, her daisy sandals from Kmart </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
squeaking across the linoleum, still gorgeous </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
in her teal swimsuit and amber earrings </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
stirring a pot of <i>arroz-con-pollo</i>, adding sprinkles </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
of onion powder and dollops of tomato sauce. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My father should still be in a terrycloth jacket </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
smoking, clinking a glass of amber whiskey </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
in the sunset at the Gulf Motel, watching us </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
dive into the pool, two boys he'll never see </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
grow into men who will be proud of him.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>There should be nothing here I don't remember</i> . . . </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My brother and I should still be playing <i>Parcheesi</i>, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
my father should still be alive, slow dancing </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
with my mother on the sliding-glass balcony </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
of The Gulf Motel. No music, only the waves </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
keeping time, a song only their minds hear </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
ten-thousand nights back to their life in Cuba. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My mother's face should still be resting against </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
his bare chest like the moon resting on the sea, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
the stars should still be turning around them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>There should be nothing here I don't remember</i> . . . </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My brother should still be thirteen, sneaking </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
rum in the bathroom, sculpting naked women </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
from sand. I should still be eight years old </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
dazzled by seashells and how many seconds </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hold my breath underwater—but I'm not. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am thirty-eight, driving up Collier Boulevard, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
looking for The Gulf Motel, for everything </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
that should still be, but isn't. I want to blame </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
the condos, their shadows for ruining the beach </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and my past, I want to chase the snowbirds away </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
with their tacky mansions and yachts, I want </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
to turn the golf courses back into mangroves, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

After listening to Richard Blanco, my buddy Jay, and I went to Little Havana to our favorite restaurant "Versailles Restaurant" for a little <i>cafecito </i>and a light dinner! Always worth the trip "Versailles" is open late and is lively with many Cuban-Americans dining, drinking and enjoying late night pastries and coffee!<!--<span id="feature_link">About the poet</span>--><br />

(Super Storm Nemo attacking New England and beyond)</div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div>
This past week was the 35th anniversary of the Blizzard of '78. To many New Englanders this is still the benchmark that storms are measured. Ironically, New England experienced a nor'easter and a blizzard on the anniversary. The region was belted with hurricane force winds, biting cold and two to three feet of snow.<br />

(Ogunquit Beach Inn after "Super Storm Nemo")</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
Ogunquit fared quite well. Yes, there was extreme high tides, beach erosion and damage-yet the electricity did not go out ( parts of Plymouth County and Cape Cod experienced 4 to 5 days with out power). Total snow accumulation in Ogunquit was 31" inches (78cm).</div>

(Ogunquit Square, at the beginning of the storm)</div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ogunquit was prepared. Electricity stayed on, and the hardy residents of Ogunquit shoveled, plowed and watched the epic storm pass through. However, I was unable to attend this snow event. Memories of the blizzard of '78 still haunt me. After the blizzard of '78, I decided that winters in New England were not for me. Yes, I do love Maine, and all it has to offer, but the hard winter months are just not my cup of tea. Guess I am not as hardy as many of my friends and neighbors. Many of my friends take to the slopes, snow shoe and enjoy the idyllic winter days.<br />

Our neighbor Tobias of the Sweet Pea Pied-a-terre gleefully stayed up all night and shoveled his tiny driveway at 3:15am in the morning. To his amazement, Cottage Street ( the street directly behind Ogunquit Beach Inn) was plowed. Ogunquit's town employees were diligent and cleaned the streets around the clock.<br />

My Grandmother (Nonni) made the best homemade manicotti from scratch. It was a favorite of mine growing up in Somerville, MA. The aroma would spread throughout the house and it was a welcome sign to all that entered: eat/mangia.<br />

I have take her recipe and modified to a gluten free version. It is just as tasty and healthy as well as comforting!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong>You will need the Following:</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWlJN7EZEEZWBi8TlbAsrVxSNg1sTNxkF61CTFRztCeFNWr8pLlmkBmBYgguQHBCG097Rf6D392ZJNnPYx41Wv5WHY8e9XID9wr5otCePZKi5mFcO7hfBvbhfYAdnDe53LrRd-rsEEEmle/s1600/GlutenFreeFlour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWlJN7EZEEZWBi8TlbAsrVxSNg1sTNxkF61CTFRztCeFNWr8pLlmkBmBYgguQHBCG097Rf6D392ZJNnPYx41Wv5WHY8e9XID9wr5otCePZKi5mFcO7hfBvbhfYAdnDe53LrRd-rsEEEmle/s320/GlutenFreeFlour.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

I have known Chef Kennet (aka Pato) and his spouse Susan for many years. Susan hails from Maine and has worked at Villas Nicolas over the years. Chef Pato has worked for some of the finest hotels in Manuel Antonio and is known throughout the area as one of the best chefs. Chef Pato now holds court at <em>El Rancho</em>, now located at Villas Nicolas.<br />

Compared to other Latin countries, Costa Ricans eat dinner relatively early. The sun sets @ 6pm almost all year. So, its dark shortly after 6pm. Restaurants generally serve dinner from 6 to 9pm<br />

<em>El</em> <em>Rancho</em> is an affordable boutique restaurant open to the public. Everyday Chef Pato and staff meet with fishermen, and farmers to search for the best products for the evening meal. One night, I had Snook, another night Sea Bass, and then tuna the following night. <br />

Chef Pato fuses native food with an international flare, yet prices are not at international heights. Many of Chef Pato's dishes are naturally Gluten Free. Unlike the USA, where the chefs are tucked away, Pato is front and center in an open air kitchen, cooking for all to see. He is conscious of dietary needs of his customers and is willing to make things for special order. Just ask!<br />

There are many dining establishments in Manuel Antonio, but this is one should not be missed. Other signature dishes are: chicken curry, Pork, and other FRESH seafoood.<br />

<br />
No matter where I am in the world, I always try to find the time to run. It is something I do almost everyday.<br />

<em>(Aerial of Puerto Quepos)</em></div>
<br />
This month I am in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a mountainous developing country. The infrastructure is not at par with the USA. Roads are narrow and often without sidewalks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIfwD_V1AS72Wg7P4h17FlIrU1QCCtRkqMyGdQqy7YHJVpN4VDhx_ai0yvgMxDv77nyiJO5hWafMYCqvtYSgLpH3e8SqBbTWxbJW5WDxsIGPmyCqZUhyvT10HfdnHVayrsN-h9yLKPUNny/s1600/runmanant.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIfwD_V1AS72Wg7P4h17FlIrU1QCCtRkqMyGdQqy7YHJVpN4VDhx_ai0yvgMxDv77nyiJO5hWafMYCqvtYSgLpH3e8SqBbTWxbJW5WDxsIGPmyCqZUhyvT10HfdnHVayrsN-h9yLKPUNny/s400/runmanant.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
In Manuel Antonio, the <i>Carretera </i>is a 7 km road that is well paved that stretches from the fishing town of Quepos to Manuel Antonio beach. The road is steep with many inclines, and tight turns. There are few sidewalks. However, there is one stretch of sidewalk that starts at the top of the mountain, and winds down to near the beach for about a mile. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBIYlXvTlrcLNzkFr6UZzGwL-1U03uarbwPBvjnSHlVxRNMh_FKsdBdphgKOFuysP6UkbzCxQqkjh61R3qy3IjzBEFHUoH7knM87wZsRsMici1Vm20KQzdmpBgCaGiupXLuIk-VWh5PqQ9/s1600/carretera.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBIYlXvTlrcLNzkFr6UZzGwL-1U03uarbwPBvjnSHlVxRNMh_FKsdBdphgKOFuysP6UkbzCxQqkjh61R3qy3IjzBEFHUoH7knM87wZsRsMici1Vm20KQzdmpBgCaGiupXLuIk-VWh5PqQ9/s400/carretera.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>(there is a sidewalk from Villa Roca to Mogambo, about a mile)</em></div>
<br />
Running on the this mountainous road is a challenge. It takes "steam & sweat" to run here. To run up the steep inclines requires a lot of steam, which in turn produces and abundance of sweat! If you are into endurance training, this is the place!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbMg21nADxkzmuLXS2kAo6m8dDxZONHI3U4VicOPoEBSby8HAQidVW8GU2T7MpBuY07tUnofQRXvuGTTiuFHttVyxUIW-TWG0AB68qixwBfl0J3M9qXwlOVcAw0VEixK0r_-ofD7UhrkwP/s1600/qubrada.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbMg21nADxkzmuLXS2kAo6m8dDxZONHI3U4VicOPoEBSby8HAQidVW8GU2T7MpBuY07tUnofQRXvuGTTiuFHttVyxUIW-TWG0AB68qixwBfl0J3M9qXwlOVcAw0VEixK0r_-ofD7UhrkwP/s400/qubrada.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The first three days my glute muscles and legs were sore from running up the mountain. My muscles were challenged. Everyday I challenged myself to overcome the pain, by increasing my mileage. By the end of two weeks I was able tackle the steep hills and inclines. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglxfcYl7L4EOiTOXRbj5cl27TSLG0-3pzbVXXRqO2yP4ZkTmH5I-rfaoKMhsm7mJVgGoa5Ccs8hOSMbNr4j2Ku_BrSWoFILPljx9Auhd5QuZZyahX2gMDyGiYn7qYsZPn-xihjjIt6o3Nh/s1600/gregmagotes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglxfcYl7L4EOiTOXRbj5cl27TSLG0-3pzbVXXRqO2yP4ZkTmH5I-rfaoKMhsm7mJVgGoa5Ccs8hOSMbNr4j2Ku_BrSWoFILPljx9Auhd5QuZZyahX2gMDyGiYn7qYsZPn-xihjjIt6o3Nh/s400/gregmagotes.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em>(incredible views and vistas on the Carretera on the way to the beach)</em></div>
<br />
While running on the main road (Carretera) I noticed, monkeys, sloths and a variety of birds ( toucans). Also, the beach on Manuel Antonio is flat, and at low tide the sand is packed down which is good for running if you don't want to tackle the massive hills....There is no need to run with a shirt in Manuel Antonio. It's a beach town, and you will sweat!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Running Tips:</b><br />Do not run in Quepos centre, its too busy. If you must run in Quepos, run from the <i>Malecon </i>towards Parrita.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Be careful running on Manuel Antonio Road ( aka la Carretera), few sidewalks. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Run early in the morning before the sun is too strong. Guys, go shirtless. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Run on Manuel Antonio beach when it is not high tide. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Enjoy!</div>

Many restaurants/bars have incredible views and offer sunset specials starting @ 4pm to 7pm. The Costa Rican mountains are lush with jungle and cascade into the Pacific ocean. Late afternoon the sky over the Pacific emerges from blue to a kaleidoscope of colors as the sun melts into the endless sea.<br />

One of our favorite places is a newer establishment called Mogambo at Rapheal's Terraza's. This little sunset bar caters to a gay clientele and is lively (especially on Sundays). The views are perfect. The right amount of jungle and Pacific. Isla Magote and other islands make a nice backdrop for a dramatic sunset. <br />

The bar has a great happy hour with two for one, and there is a cute restaurant locate down below. The bar/restaurant is locate halfway between the beach and the top of the hill on the "Manuel Antonio Road" aka careterra. While at this bar, we ran into people we knew from Boston. You never know who you may meet in the jungle!<br />

This uninhabited island is a protected sanctuary for birds. The rocky island jumps up from the Pacific. In 1519 ( over 100 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock) Ponce de Leon "discovered" Quepos and Manuel Antonio. He was looking for the infamous "Fountain of Youth". I actually believe he may have found it! The nearby Nicoya region in Costa Rica is known as a "Blue Zone" by National Geographic. Blue Zones are areas in the world where people live long lives, often into their 100's.<br />

There are several beaches in Manuel Antonio. The main beach stretches from The National Park ( a protected preserve) to the horse shoe bay of "Playitas". The main beach is long (1.5 km) with dramatic tides.<br />

On the main beach there are concessions where you can rent chairs and umbrellas. We rented a chair and umbrella everyday. Even though it is 9 degrees above the equator, Costa Ricans call January, February and March summer. It's the warmest time of year, and there is less rain. Strong sun block is recommended, you can burn sitting in the shade!<br />

The jungle stretches from the mountains and empties into the Pacific. Wildlife preserves, thick rain forests and the National Park ensures that there is an abundance of wild life and biodiversity. We saw three different breeds of monkeys, two different breeds of sloths and countless birds in the jungle and on the beach. <br />

Sunsets are amazing over the Pacific. I am use to seeing the sun rise over the Atlantic. So, it was nice to spend a few late afternoons on the beach and watch the sun sink into the warm waters of the Pacific, and watch nature paint the sky red.....<em>Pura Vida.....</em><br />

(Greg & Michael, 1999, first trip)</div>
<br />
It is simply one of our favorite places in the world to go! This is my ninth trip and Michael's twelfth trip to this remote resort area in the Pacific region. Going back to Manuel Antonio is great, it's like visiting an old friend: warm, comfortable and always welcoming. <br />

<br />
Since 1999 We have stayed at <a href="http://www.villasnicolas/">Villas Nicolas</a>. Villas Nicolas is a collection of warm self catering "hotel villas" that are situated on the top of the "hill" in Manuel Antonio overlooking the jungle and Pacific ocean. These units are rented daily/weekly or by the month.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgDZDWerAiSnmVcZwSsIhTgxdEscOagG7yZ4vxs-1QtcRt8rkYZkN0w3Xm-VqIm9lth6RamXLtcvmOD0JR6uGZgjyy1qo2KhlH5qZc1ktu1kAXQm6Nr3_axkKohiXRtK3TDBbjL-z9FaEc/s1600/monkenic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgDZDWerAiSnmVcZwSsIhTgxdEscOagG7yZ4vxs-1QtcRt8rkYZkN0w3Xm-VqIm9lth6RamXLtcvmOD0JR6uGZgjyy1qo2KhlH5qZc1ktu1kAXQm6Nr3_axkKohiXRtK3TDBbjL-z9FaEc/s320/monkenic.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

Most of the "villas" have a small kitchenette, a well appointed bed room, sitting area and out side terraces. Units are decorated with art work from local artists. There is a wide variety of units from budget to deluxe. The grounds are a mix of native tropical plants, with three different types of monkeys that travel through the thick jungle canopy everyday. Everyday we see and hear a variety of primates at our door step!<br />

You may remember that a freak snow storm paralyzed much of New England and the northeast during the same weekend in October in 2011....<br />
<br />

Ogunquit experienced winds, and tidal dune shifts, but not too much damage. Hours after Super Storm Sandy hit New England, we decided to leave for our annual trek to Florida.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We arrived in Florida, and was surprised to see that Fort Lauderdale beach coast was hit "super" hard by Super Storm Sandy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
Most people know that parts of the NY coastline and New Jersey were hard hit. However, many people didn't realize that Sandy socked the coast of Florida first. <br />

For a decade I have ran along the coast of Fort lauderdale beach. The beach is long and not too wide and the sidewalk sits next to the beach-perfect for my daily run. However, Super Storm Sandy punched Fort lauderdale pretty hard, and shifted sand on to Route A1A. About 2500 feet of Route A1A is closed down. The sidewalk, street, palm trees and beach have been washed away.<br />

Halloween weekend is usually a fun time. Many repeat guests re-visit Ogunquit to see the village-by-the-sea shine int its autumn colors. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHu-Ui-C2YmTSupIvypan3_6cbHe4EcvLSb0pkJfIvR7XlAPmqdOAss3JZ12rP54R_Kpwuck6pBap2D3KgolsKJqfHJpiIqcckZdng8O6Emsy1HYG_cnVY6KVH2E-P_uh_7qtn3ABsnu8M/s1600/stevensbday.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHu-Ui-C2YmTSupIvypan3_6cbHe4EcvLSb0pkJfIvR7XlAPmqdOAss3JZ12rP54R_Kpwuck6pBap2D3KgolsKJqfHJpiIqcckZdng8O6Emsy1HYG_cnVY6KVH2E-P_uh_7qtn3ABsnu8M/s400/stevensbday.png" width="300" /></a></div>

It's a time for merriement and commarerderie as guests piece together their halloween costumes. <br />
<br />
This year halloween celebrations were on the eve of Super Storm Sandy. Super Storm Sandy raged up the east coast and devistated parts of teh Jersey Shore and New York. Ogunquit was spared. Ogunquit received high winds, but little damage. Notice how high the sand it!<br />

Warm air arrived after evening showers. This type of fog on the beach always makes my morning run a challenge. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5So3A3J3ItC1T3blzMiONZixOBJicL1oQ4L9jsjxFX95YsdKJHzFztV7cHUn0AsZvvoSGpsTOl0Sx5ml1oPhq4mTJURCEOUDZH5Tt5WR4lIjJO97noOaxbPrvzqzzrejG9QSWQySa-YNR/s1600/octfoggy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5So3A3J3ItC1T3blzMiONZixOBJicL1oQ4L9jsjxFX95YsdKJHzFztV7cHUn0AsZvvoSGpsTOl0Sx5ml1oPhq4mTJURCEOUDZH5Tt5WR4lIjJO97noOaxbPrvzqzzrejG9QSWQySa-YNR/s400/octfoggy.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
While running on my usual beach route, I literally stumbled up this rather large marine creature. The "fish" was about four feet long and probably weighed about 300 pounds. I almost fell over it while I was running in the thick fog. I stopped and looked at it. <br />
Was is a baby whale or Sea Cow? I had no idea. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHJDuGKWJFIyHeslsddzhSYkXi48qcGvl0B5j2VLLdEfVkbAU0-d0B5Nrsleq84KlYdXY-j80vHZoiNqAkXrB_rLGVy4rDMyIrpsFK3pUVCSedPo9JQdbvQd6xcPIx9LCC_XCVsUqr_idV/s1600/sunfishy.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHJDuGKWJFIyHeslsddzhSYkXi48qcGvl0B5j2VLLdEfVkbAU0-d0B5Nrsleq84KlYdXY-j80vHZoiNqAkXrB_rLGVy4rDMyIrpsFK3pUVCSedPo9JQdbvQd6xcPIx9LCC_XCVsUqr_idV/s400/sunfishy.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
After my run, I went back home and got my camera and took some pictures. I needed to know what this creature was. After posting this picture on Facebook, many of my friends identified it as a Ocean Sunfish.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoTOGEc8JCr6gChYkF1iQSxU91uD-WSXJfjo_SAHVdwyY4TPPfMTavgoDH1Xv9uP9zHoUes19bFTALyY1cwNBoBzCXSS8V3tCBBm3HVrr6B1jrU7xyGL4rCfamLYhik_IkxWEwDasu-zhI/s1600/fishoct.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="387" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoTOGEc8JCr6gChYkF1iQSxU91uD-WSXJfjo_SAHVdwyY4TPPfMTavgoDH1Xv9uP9zHoUes19bFTALyY1cwNBoBzCXSS8V3tCBBm3HVrr6B1jrU7xyGL4rCfamLYhik_IkxWEwDasu-zhI/s400/fishoct.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
According to wikipedia: <br />
The <b>ocean sunfish</b>, <i><b>Mola mola</b></i>, or <b>common mola</b>, is the heaviest known <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteichthyes" title="Osteichthyes">bony fish</a> in the world. It has an average adult weight of 1,000 kg (2,200 lb). The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species" title="Species">species</a> is native to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_fish" title="Tropical fish">tropical</a> and <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperate" title="Temperate">temperate</a> waters around the globe. It resembles a fish head with a tail, and its main body is flattened laterally. Sunfish can be as tall as they are long when their <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorsal_fin" title="Dorsal fin">dorsal</a> and ventral <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelvic_fins" title="Pelvic fins">fins</a> are extended.<br />
<br />
You never know what you'll find running on this long beach: Whales, large tropical fish, ghost ships. or lobster traps!<br />
